Two BA Art and Design students are among eight artists who have been chosen to brighten up empty shops in the centre of Stirling.
Second year Louisa Carberry (21) from Menstrie, in her third year of a BA Art and Design at Forth Valley College and Jacqueline ‘Jacque’ Scorgie (23) from Cumbernauld, who is currently studying towards her BA Honours in Art and Design at Stirling University after gaining her BA degree at FVC’s Stirling Campus, have both been selected to showcase their creative skills in the Street Stories initiative launched recently by Go Forth Stirling Business Improvement District (BID).
Artists were invited to submit art celebrating Stirling, its people and heritage which could be brought to life via interactive Augmented Reality (AR) - multi-sensory animation triggered by a free downloadable smartphone app.
Eight artists were then selected by a judging panel including Go Forth Stirling Project Director Danielle McRorie-Smith; Street Stories Project Manager Charlotte Mawby and the team at design agency Arch Creative, and Scene Stirling Manager Kevin Harrison.
The artworks chosen cover a range of different mediums, including mosaic, digital, mural, graphic design, dance and abstract art, and the artists are currently working with the Street Stories team to develop the stories which will feature within each design.
The artists will see artworks featured on vacant shop windows including the city’s former BHS and Argos stores.
Louisa, said: “I am extremely excited and overwhelmed by this opportunity and without the teaching and encouragement from FVC staff I would never have had the courage to apply.
“I created the work featured in the Street Stories Project in my second year of my HND in response to a given brief. Without the task the works that have taken me this far wouldn't exist."
Jacque, said: “When I found out that I had been selected I was really excited. This opportunity sounded amazing when I read the call out and I was intrigued about how the AR element would look with my work. I cannot wait till the install to see it come to life.
“Through my three years at FVC, my creativity and artwork developed through the opportunities to explore a range of mediums and genres. I embraced all possibilities and experimented as much as I could, spending a lot of time in the workshop, resulting in a practice that I now call diverse. The team of lecturers and technicians were always encouraging and excited to see where I would take works next.”
Linda Paterson, Curriculum Manager in the Department of Creative Industries at Forth Valley College, said: “We are delighted that Louisa and Jacque have been selected for this initiative, it’s a fantastic opportunity for them to showcase their work alongside established local artists. We actively support students by promoting opportunities such as this and it’s great to see our students grasp these opportunities and succeed. It is testament to their dedication and hard work that they managed to achieve this during the current situation. I can’t wait to see what they produce!”
