Three Higher English classes run at Forth Valley College have delivered 17 A results – the highest number of top grades ever recorded through the college for this course.
Lecturers Judith Horne, Emma MacNair and Rob McDermott are rightly proud of the 2018/19 Higher English learners who also notched up a further 26 passes (12 Bs and 14 Cs) from the classes – two evening and one day - held at the Stirling and Falkirk Campuses.
The news further enhances the reputation of the Higher English class at FVC which regularly boasts a high pass rate, which has reached 91% in recent years. These results are all the more remarkable, given that many of the students who sign up for the course have not always succeeded when it came to studying English in the past.
Judith, said: “We have students who come in to study for the English Higher who have complex learning needs and who have previously failed at school. What we do here very well at Forth Valley College is offer support as much as we can, so that the students can achieve their potential in a flexible and understanding environment.”
Emma, said: “This was my first year teaching the Higher English and I was a little nervous because of the high pass rates that had been recorded before. I shared teaching my class with Rob and it was great. The students were a really good group who worked really well together. Many of them were mature students who had not done well at school, but they were really enthusiastic and keen to learn. Recording 17 As is a great result.”
Rob, said: “In all my years of teaching the English Higher I have never met a group of students who have taken ownership of their learning in such a great way as this group. They collaborated very effectively working many additional hours outside college, showing great commitment to their studies. As a consequence of this they did very well in their exam. We are all very proud of them.”
