HNC Police Studies

Anyone hoping to begin a new career in the policing sector should investigate what’s on offer on a new fast track Reset course on offer at Forth Valley College.

The new six month long HNC Police Studies course – which starts in January 2021 -was recently unveiled as part of FVC’s range of Reset Courses to be offered as part of the exciting new East Central Scotland Colleges Collaboration. In previous years it had been targeted mainly at school leavers, but applications are open now to encourage mature students interested in a career-change into law enforcement.

Annually in Scotland alone, 1000 new police officers need to be recruited and the well-respected HNC provides an advantageous qualification, especially for students leaving school. However, the HNC Police Studies has also helped graduates find jobs in the Home Office Crisis and Intervention team, the Military Police and as part-time Special Constables.

FVC Police Studies Lecturer, John Barclay, said: “These days, interviews for joining the police are competency based and having this qualification on your CV, especially for those who have just left school, demonstrates to interviewers that you will have experiences that they are looking for.

“The HNC Police Studies qualification is certainly going to be attractive to Police Scotland as students will among other things, experience site visits to operational police teams and stations and visit the Tullialan Police College for a full 24 hour period as part of their course.

“Other positive destinations include progression to university as the FVC course has several excellent articulation routes to year two of Police Degrees throughout Scotland. We look forward to hearing from anyone who is up for the challenge of applying for our course. If they are accepted, they will not regret it.”

The Collaboration initiative launched last month, involves Edinburgh College, Fife College, West Lothian College and FVC aims to deliver skills and opportunities in Scotland to support the economic recovery, currently suffering from the effects of the pandemic lockdown.

Each college will offer a comprehensive skills programme – including Accelerator (Fast Track) and Skills Boost courses - all designed to help meet the future needs of their specific communities as well as the country as a whole.
