Construction Modern Apprentices at Forth Valley College will be building on their portfolios and career skills earlier than before, thanks to an innovative move by the College’s Work Based Assessors Team.
In the midst of Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2023, FVC have revealed how MAs are now asked to complete their Onefile Inductions sooner in their course, which will prepare them better for the start of the SVQ qualification. It will also help them:
- to have a better understanding of their qualification
- to understand what is required from them
- find out about the standards of workplace evidence
- how to gather and submit their evidence to their assessor via Onefile e-portfolio
This photograph shows the Carpentry and Joinery group in the Stirling Campus during their Onefile Induction, but Bricklaying and Wood Machining MAs, as well as the Construction MAs going into their third year have also benefitted recently from the move.
Isabel Meikleham, FVC’s Assessment Manager Multi-Discipline, said: “This new approach to the Induction process has been developed to provide the apprentices with a structured knowledge of the Construction SVQ’s, Onefile e-portfolio and methods of assessment that will be used. By bringing the apprentices into College this allowed the assessors to meet their candidates in a relaxed setting, providing guidance on workplace evidence required and how to gather and upload to Onefile e-portfolio.
“Additional benefits to this new approach allows Assessors to build relationships with their apprentices before meeting them on-site. By bringing apprentices into college this eliminated any potential impact which may have been caused by IT poverty, as all apprentices were provided with the same access to IT equipment in the classroom. This positive approach will also help apprentices going forward with their SVQ Journey.”
At the moment firms such as Alexander Dennis, Syngenta, Edinburgh Airport and Bo’ness Railway are actively recruiting for Engineering MAs, so anyone interested in finding out more about the FVC Modern Apprenticeship programme should visit https://www.forthvalley.ac.uk/ways-to-study/apprenticeships/modern-apprenticeships/
