Two cyber security experts visited Forth Valley College’s Falkirk Campus recently to talk to Computing students.
Andrew Dillin and Fiona Kelly, who both work in financial services, held two sessions, gave a presentation at each and gave Access to Software Development students the opportunity to ask questions on the industry, on Monday 27 February.
Andrew, Security Intelligence Manager, said: “The students were very engaging and had some really thought provoking questions, which was great to see. I’m hopeful that we see some of them taking up security related roles in the future.”
Fiona, Information Security Consultant, said: “It was a pleasure to work with the students, who had a range of challenging questions for us and it was great to see that level of engagement in what can often be a complex and niche subject. I would welcome a return visit to continue to support the students on their careers in to this field of expertise.”
FVC Computing Lecturer Alan Paton, who organised the visit, said: “We can’t thank Andrew and Fiona enough. They came to talk to the students about what working in cyber security in the financial sector is really like, what actually goes on, and what skills are required to progress in cyber security.
“Their very informative and interesting talk gave the students an insight in to the type of threats they deal with on a daily basis, and also what can happen in a more severe scenario. In particular they discussed the industry-wide response to a recent high-profile telecoms company breach, giving valuable insight having been involved directly at the time.”
Vivien Gallacher, Curriculum Manager in FVC’s Creative Industries, responsible for the Computing section, said: “It is great to have such high calibre professional guest lecturers such as Andrew and Fiona coming in to talk to our students. Presentations enhance the innovative teaching that goes on in our department and their experience is sure to inspire and benefit all the students who attended.”
