Apprentice engineers at Forth Valley College have gained vital workplace experience and helped out their college – leading up to Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2020 - as they put their new skills to the test installing equipment in a workshop.
The Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB) Modern Apprentices used their skills to kit out the new FVC Falkirk Campus engineering workshops.
The installation project formed part of the apprentices’ course work and gave them an insight into planning, process, installation and equipment needed for such a job. The group, all at various stages of the prestigious Oil and Gas Technical Apprentice Programme (OGTAP), which is supported by Government training body the ECITB, are sure to benefit from the practical experience and are proud to create something that will be a legacy for future students.
William Forrest, FVC’s Operations Manager in the Department of Engineering and Science, said: “Following our move from the old Falkirk Campus to of state-of-the-art new building, our second year offshore contractor apprentices from ECITB are making their learning work by providing insight, skill and knowledge to support the re-instatement of our practical learning resources across our new engineering workshop. These young people have embraced the opportunity with both hands and continue to impress with their application, diligence and skills.”
Paul Hynd, Account Manager for the ECITB, said: “This project is a fantastic example of creative thinking by the college. Moving specialist equipment from one location to another is a realistic project that would take place in the workplace. For the apprentices to plan and execute this process of installing, testing and commissioning the equipment to such a high standard is a great achievement – both they and the college should be rightfully proud.”
The group were: Kieran Taylor; Sean Dilworth; Alex Brewitt; Matt Reynolds; Sam Paterson; Liam McEwan; Reece Wannan; Jude Allan and Ryan Kane all from Petrofac, Lewis Tait; Scott Johnson and Alyssa Malcolmson from Aker Solutions, Marc Brankin; Eythin Duncan; Sam Atkinson and Reece O'Leary from Wood, Cayleigh Will from Altrad, Alexander Kerr; Corryn Rae and Gregor Loughrie from Worley.
