Today is Global Parents Day (1 June 2020)!
It’s probably safe to say that the last few months have been a challenge for most parents…no matter what your circumstances.
This will especially be true if you’re having to balance childcare with working or studying from home.
Whilst there’s no perfect solution to making this work – we’ve provided some tips below which might help you manage this more effectively and keep your stress levels down as much as possible!
Try to avoid pressure
It’s impossible to give your family your undivided attention and be 100% on focused on your studies or work at the same time. Try to make time in your day to do both but be prepared for interruptions and try not be frustrated when they happen. Prioritising tasks is also key – identify tasks that must be done and do these first.
Plan your day
A schedule for your day may be beneficial in terms of mapping out what you would like to achieve whether it’s completing a specific college or work task or a home-school lesson. However, be prepared to be flexible with times and move things around as the day progresses!
Capitalise on any free time
If you have young children who still go for a nap in the afternoon or your older children are busy with an online lesson with their school – take this time to focus on your work or studies.
Choose your work space wisely
In an ideal world, you would have a separate work space where you can get some quiet time to get on with your work or studies. However, if this isn’t possible try to minimise distractions where you can e.g. ask your children to wear headphones if they’re using devices if possible, etc. and ensure your space is comfortable and clutter free.
Keep the kids entertained
Keeping your family entertained is key to getting the time you need to work or study. If you’re stuck for ideas there are lots of great ideas online for both individual and family activities which should prevent your kids from getting bored. You could try baking, crafts, or look for outdoor activities and make the best of the lovely weather we’ve been having!
Ask for help
Whilst current circumstances mean that many parents can’t get help with childcare at the moment, you should let your line manager or lecturer know if you’re struggling. This will enable you to talk through any issues you’re experiencing and try to find solutions to help.
Look after yourself
With so many demands being placed on parents, it’s also vital to look after yourself and your own physical and mental wellbeing. Try to find some time for yourself everyday to relax or do something you enjoy.
We hope these tips are useful! And to all the parents out there – you’re doing a great job :)
