Creating Brave Spaces to Speak Truth - For her Voice, her Strength, her Story

Creating Brave Spaces to Speak Truth - For her Voice, her Strength, her Story
16 Days of Action

From 25 November to 10 December, we mark 16 days of activism against gender-based violence (GBV).  Often when observing this date the remark “what about the men?” is commonly heard.  It is true that men experience violence within straight and queer relationships however; the proportion of violence that women experience largely outweighs that of their male counterparts.  Gender based violence is a term that may be more generally known as violence against women.  However, gender based violence more appropriately describes the phenomenon because it is deeply ingrained in inequality and the assuming of limiting gender roles.  Abuse in same sex relationships is similarly steeped in homophobia and the understanding of where the power lies allows the abuser to manipulate perceptions of control. Overall, GBV encompasses a wide range of behaviours that start with the seemingly harmless to the blatantly violent.  The former of which is explored in the That Guy Campaign by Police Scotland.

What is Gender based violence?

Gender-based Violence (GBV) is violence that is directed towards an individual based on their sex or gender identity.  It includes physical, sexual, verbal, emotional and psychological abuse, threats, coercion, and economic or educational deprivation, whether occurring in public or private life.

Understanding that acceptance of such behaviours begins with language and culture is imperative to eradicating GBV.  Please join us in the events below to raise awareness in December:

  • Online Consent Café with Forth Valley Rape Crisis (Wednesday 1 December 2021)
  • Walk to the Kelpies (Thursday 9 December 2021) If you are interested in taking part, please email waimun.lee@forthvalley.ac.uk

For a deeper understanding, check out this course via Moodle - Course: Rape Crisis Scotland (forthvalley.ac.uk)

We are also looking for White Ribbon volunteers.  For more information, have a look at the White Ribbon Scotland website here and get in touch with equality@forthvalley.ac.uk if you would like to get involved.
