NPA Sport and Fitness: Team Sports (Football)

***PLEASE NOTE - only pupils who will be at school during session 2022/23 can apply for this course***

The NPA award provides practical opportunities to; Understand and apply the roles and functions of a Sports Coach; Use communication and leadership styles required to conduct activity sessions; Lead physical activity sessions; Plan, implement and review activity sessions as part of a team; Organise and Officiate planned sporting activities. The award is designed to articulate with current college Sports Coaching and Development provision and to support those who may wish to follow, in future, that particular employment pathway.

The NPA will provide you with opportunity to:

• Gain an introductory insight and knowledge of the sports coaching industry. • Develop an educational path to higher level study in sport. • Build your confidence and learning skills. • Develop your employable skills, such as; Teamwork, Communication, Problem Solving, Timekeeping and Leadership.

Attendance: Falkirk Campus: Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from August until June for one year.

Being practically orientated, the course will contain the following subjects:

  • Sport and Fitness: Coaching Development
  • Sports Officiating and Organising: Indoor Football
  • Sporting Activity Participation and Performance: Indoor Football

The NPA in Sport & Fitness: Team Sports (Football) is not designed to lead directly to employment, but will underpin the knowledge and skills required by employers. It will provide progression opportunities for higher level study, which can lead to employment within the following areas

  • Sports Coaching
  • Sports Development
  • Active Schools
  • Leisure Operations
  • Events Management

  • On successful completion of this course students will have the opportunity to apply to progress onto the Full-Time programme ‘Pathways to Sports Coaching: Football Studies’ (SCQF level 6) or the Part–Time Schools programme: ‘NPA Exercise & Fitness Leadership’ (SCQF level 6).


  • Full personal statement detailing reasons for applying and for consideration for a place on the course.
  • Attendance at information session
  • A strong interest in Sports Coaching
  • A willingness to conduct Sports Coaching sessions within a peer group.

Plus one of the following:

  • 3 National 4 awards (or equivalent) including English or (Comm’s equivalent) and preferably PE & science based subjects at Grade C or above.
