Foundation Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering (Schools) - 2 Year Option

Please note that only secondary school pupils staying on at school and who will be starting S5/S6 in August 2020 are eligible to apply for this course.

This Foundation Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering could be the building block pupils need for a career in the industry and is a great way to get hands-on experience and also gain a qualification at the same level as a Higher. Pupils will have the unique chance to develop skills and knowledge across a range of civil engineering topics in several learning environments, including the classroom and practical fieldwork, alongside the experience of a valuable work placement with an employer.

What qualifications will pupils achieve?

On successful completion, pupils will achieve a Foundation Apprenticeship (Group Award) in Civil Engineering at SCQF Level 6 (the same level as a Higher), which includes:

• A National Certificate in Civil Engineering at SCQF Level 6 (this course consists of 12 units)
• A work-based unit from the SVQ in Civil Engineering (SCQF Level 6)

Attendance

Pupils will attend Forth Valley College or a local secondary school for six hours per week for both years of the course (this is likely to be two half days).
During the course you will also spend up to two weeks in a work placement with an employer, and/or spend time working on an Industry Challenge project.

(Please note that this course continues throughout periods of study leave from school and it is very important that pupils attend during these periods, except on exam days).

All travel to College and work placements is funded.

• Possible accelerated entry onto the second year of a Modern Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering Contracting or Civil Engineering Consultancy
• Application for a Graduate Level Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering
• Higher level study at college on HNC Civil Engineering
• Progressing straight into a job in the construction sector
• Opening up future avenues for international work and travel, as qualifications are internationally recognised
• Using the Foundation Apprenticeship alongside Highers to apply to university

• Pupils will probably be working towards achieving one or two Highers over S5 and S6 and their school will need to confirm that they are ready to study at Higher level
• Pupils should be working towards at least National 5 in Maths, English and a technical or science subject in S5 and predicted to pass these courses at grade C or above
