PDA Childhood Practice (SCQF level 8)

The PDA Childhood Practice course offers opportunities for qualified practitioners to enhance their professional knowledge and understanding beyond the practitioner role.  The PDA would ideally suit aspiring leaders or those looking to take on a senior role within a childhood practice setting and is designed to support professional development of practitioners who wish to enhance their professional practice.   This is a part-time blended learning course designed for individuals already working in the early learning and childcare or playwork sectors who are interested in progressing their careers. 


Important Information for all non UK nationals

The College has a requirement to complete a residency check on all non-UK nationals for tuition fee purposes. When you book and pay for your course online, please be aware that you will be contacted by a member of our Student Administration team and asked to provide documents i.e. a copy of your passport; proof of your settlement status and EU share code.

Following assessment of evidence, if you do not meet the criteria for ‘home fee status’, you will contacted and advised of any additional fee required.

EU Nationals

If you are currently living in the UK then you should have already applied for the EU Settlement Scheme which will allow you to continue living in the UK. 

From 1st January 2021, if you are a national of a country outwith the UK it is most likely you will need a visa to study in the UK.  You can check if you require a visa by visiting the UK Government’s website here.  If you require a student visa, further information can be obtained at the following link.

The PDA in Childhood Practice at SCQF level 8 covers:

  • Enhanced Professional Practice
  • Leadership and Team Working
  • Integrated Working and Collaborative Practice
  • Policy to Practice
  • Pedagogical Approaches

  • Senior Practitioner

  • Completion of HND Childhood Practice
  • PDA level 9 Childhood Practice
  • BA Childhood Practice

Applicants must hold a relevant registerable practitioner qualification accepted by Scottish Social Services Council such as HNC Childhood Practice or SVQ Social Services (Children and Young People) at SCQF level 7.  Applicants should also have a minimum of one year post-qualifying experience in a relevant job role in the childhood practice sector.  Applicants will be assessed on personal statement, qualifications, experience and successful interview.  Clear Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) check required.

Course places are only secured after payment/funding has been arranged. 

As per the College Tuition Fees and Refund Policy, tuition fees are non-refundable except under exceptional circumstances.


Student Paying

Fees of less than £150 must be paid in full. Payment by instalment is available, provided the course fee is greater than £150.

Instalments must be paid via direct debit over a 4-month period and an initial 30% deposit is required in order to secure your place. You will not be able to apply online if paying by direct debit, you must contact Evening Admissions by email at - eveninginfo@forthvalley.ac.uk


Employer Paying

If your employer is paying for your tuition fees, an Employers Agreement form or letter from your employer must be submitted prior to or on enrolment. You can access the Employer Agreement form here and this should be returned to evening admissions - eveninginfo@forthvalley.ac.uk

Refunds will only be given if the course is cancelled or significantly altered by the College. Please refer to our Tuition Fee and Withdrawal procedure for further information.


Fee waiver

Some students may be eligible for a tuition fee waiver if in receipt of certain types of benefits. Fee waiver evidence must be submitted either before or on enrolment. Refer to our Tuition and Fee Waiver Policy for further information.

Part Time Fee Grant

If you are aged 16 or over, living in Scotland and earn £25,000 a year or less you can access a Part-time Fee Grant from the Scottish Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS). The level of funding is dependent on the number of credits studied (for HNC level and above).

You can apply and access the full eligibility criteria via the part-time funding section of the SAAS website at: www.saas.gov.uk. Before you apply you will need information such as the course you will be attending and the number of SCQF credits for your course. This information can be provided by emailing: PTFG@forthvalley.ac.uk.

If successful, a letter of award will be issued which will include how much funding you have been awarded.

SAAS do not fund the full tuition fees for part-time courses.
