Get Ready for HNC Childhood Practice - Evening

This introductory preparation course is designed to support those working within, as well as those who are looking to enter into the field of Early Learning and Childcare. Candidates will develop practical skills and the industry standard underpinning knowledge, necessary for career progression within the Early Learning and Childcare sector.

This is a 12 week programme with 4 classroom sessions and access to online resources designed to support those who wish to undertake the HNC Childhood Practice qualification starting in August 2023.

The Early Learning and Childcare sector has been expanding over the last few years and demand for qualified Early Years staff is strong. This course prepares the candidate for direct entry to the HNC Childhood Practice programme at Forth Valley College (subject to successful application and interview)  and provides learners with the necessary skills and knowledge required for a career in Early Learning and Childcare. 

The course will provide the learner with a wide knowledge of the factors, which influence children's care and their learning and development. You will gain an understanding of the principles, values and legislation underpinning early years practice.

Important Information for all non UK nationals

The College has a requirement to complete a residency check on all non-UK nationals for tuition fee purposes. When you book and pay for your course online, please be aware that you will be contacted by a member of our Student Administration team and asked to provide documents i.e. a copy of your passport; proof of your settlement status and EU share code.

Following assessment of evidence, if you do not meet the criteria for ‘home fee status’, you will contacted and advised of any additional fee required.

EU Nationals

If you are currently living in the UK then you should have already applied for the EU Settlement Scheme which will allow you to continue living in the UK.

This course provides you with the opportunity to reflect on your own personal development whilst also allowing you the opportunity to update and expand existing knowledge.

You will be introduced to the following areas:

  • Study skills for HNC Childhood Practice
  • Current Landscape Early Learning and Childcare
  • Curriculum for Excellence
  • Development Theory
  • Planning for learning

    This course is designed with a blended approach using traditional classroom based learning supported with a range of online resources and activities.

  • No formal entry requirements are required for this programme although applicants should have good communication skills and the ability to work at SCQF level 6.
  • Please note that there is an entry criteria for the HNC Childhood Practice programme.

Course places are only secured after payment/funding has been arranged

As per the College Tuition Fees and Refund Policy, tuition fees are non-refundable except under exceptional circumstances.


Student Paying

Fees of less than £150 must be paid in full. Payment by instalment is available, provided the course fee is greater than £150.

Instalments must be paid via direct debit over a 4-month period and an initial 30% deposit is required in order to secure your place. You will not be able to apply online if paying by direct debit, you must contact Evening Admissions by email at -


Employer Paying

If your employer is paying for your tuition fees, an Employers Agreement form or letter from your employer must be submitted prior to or on enrolment. You can access the Employer Agreement form here and this should be returned to evening admissions

Refunds will only be given if the course is cancelled or significantly altered by the College. Please refer to our Tuition Fee and Withdrawal procedure for further information.
