Rhys Norris and his work

Rhys Norris (21) from Stirling is in Year three of the BA Art & Design course at Forth Valley College.

He said: “I first started taking landscape photos with the first camera I bought before starting at FVC. The more experience I got with my camera I decided it would be more beneficial to learn more about photography at College, to sharpen my skills, that’s why I looked at applying to Forth Valley College.

“The facilities are great and the whole time I have been here, they have been easy to use and the lecturers have explained things well and have helped us with any problems we come across. I have never felt lost or unable to speak to anyone or know where to go, as the lecturers are very honest and genuine.

“Since studying here, I would say that my confidence has grown massively. The wide range of briefs that I've had are a great payoff, for all the learning that we do in the way of sharpening our skills. Also having only three days at most at College gives you that opportunity to have that quiet time you need to practice and learn more.

“Now I am currently building my own studio as I found my passion for portrait photography. That's the confidence that Forth Valley College education and lecturing has instilled in me over time. I am setting up for my future plans, whilst still being able to ask any of my photography lecturers their advice about starting up as it's still early in my career, so best of both worlds.

“I would definitely recommend photography at Forth Valley College because they have great lecturing staff and facilities, that cater to your every concern and needs.

“I was nervous at first starting photography but the lecturing staff were great in making sure you get the best out of your work. So you will never feel lost when starting. I wasn't that familiar with the camera as some others were in my class, but they break every question down into a simple understanding. The lecturing staff are also great in bringing a class together which has been so beneficial to my work, as I have got to work with great people and their great ideas. It just sharpens and inspires you to get better.

“Looking back from where I am now in my FVC journey, the final payoff of exhibiting your works is so rewarding.  Getting to see your work and your peers up on the wall at FVC is inspiring and triggers your train of thought for future work. There's so much that goes into the printing and exhibiting process that makes you take more pride in your work, which I am currently always thinking about in my new course.

“For potential students thinking about choosing photography at FVC, I would say that you will get on well with the staff and the briefs are all beneficial in sharpening your skills. You will never feel lost at the College and the facilities that come with photography are great and easily accessible inside and outside of College if you need it.

“There's nothing specific that I would say I love the most as my experience at FVC has been great. This is because I am proud of all my work that I have produced during my time at College, thanks to the facilities and lecturers. I love the fact that my work is progressing all the time and that I am inspired by my peers all the time.”
