Matthew Nimmo says that the lecturers at Forth Valley College go that extra mile to support students on their courses.
The 37-year-old from Grangemouth began studying a NC Applied Science course in 2016 and ended up graduating with a HND Applied Biological Sciences in June 2020. He managed to complete his course despite working shifts as a nurse throughout out the pandemic lockdown.
Matthew, who won Most Promising Student in the Department of Engineering and Science in 2020, said: “I found the facilities within the college very well equipped, with all the materials and resources needed to gain a lot of practical experience. I also found all the lecturers very supportive, approachable and willing to go the extra mile to support students with any issues, whether they were course related or personal. I personally owe them a huge debt of gratitude for all the support they have given me over the past few years.”
Matthew is now progressing onto a BSC Applied Biological Sciences degree course at the University of Stirling.
He went on: “I worked full-time with NHS Forth Valley as a mental health Nursing Assistant for about 10 years before I decided to apply to college. My post had little chance for advancement and I felt that I had reached an age that, if I didn’t take a chance and leave to pursue qualifications for a great career, I probably never would. I have continued to work with the NHS staff bank throughout my studies.
“I chose FVC as I had always heard positive stories from friends that have attended the college. That coupled with it being the closest college to where I live made it an easy decision to apply there.
“During my time at the college I made many new friends while gaining lots of new knowledge and skills. I also feel that my experience at the college has helped me gain a lot of confidence. The college has given me a lot of knowledge and practical skills that will be a big advantage moving on to university.
“I would recommend the college and the course as the lab facilities are state of the art and well equipped. The teaching staff are also fantastic, always friendly, approachable and willing to do whatever it takes to help with any difficulties you might have. I always enjoyed the practical lab work and teamworking exercises.
Summing up his experience at Forth Valley College in three words, Matthew, said: “Fun, interesting, amazing.”
