Martin Derham scooped the top student award in the Department of Electrical, Instrumentation and Chemical Engineering – and describes him time at FVC as a ‘Life changing Adventure!’
Martin (26) from Falkirk, who graduated with a HND Electrical Engineering in October 2017, said: “It’s a very proud personal achievement. When I returned to education, my expectations of myself were not very high. I didn’t really do very well at school and with more responsibility as a parent and step-parent, I thought I would give it my best shot. To not only achieve the grades that I have, but to also be acknowledged with this award is something I never thought would be possible.
“I feel incredibly proud. After all my hard work, to receive the grades that I have and then to win this award it is just the cherry on top. It’s improved my confidence in my ability and I’m excited to carry on at University.
“I had heard from family and friends and from research online, that Forth Valley College had one of the best Electrical Engineering Departments in Scotland. Having a local campus near where I live was just perfect and reinforced the decision to study there.
“I have no words to describe the lecturers, they have been truly amazing. They have immeasurable knowledge and offer encouragement and support. They have always gone that extra mile to help ensure you are given the best opportunity to develop. The facilities are also great and with a new campus being built soon, I’m excited for the future students.
“I am in debt to Forth Valley College. I didn’t do particularly well at school and had absolutely no experience or knowledge of electrical engineering before starting the course. Even after a gap from education of around four years, Forth Valley College has given me the chance for a career that I could only dream of.
“After three years at Forth Valley College, I have now been offered year two entry at Strathclyde University to study BEng Electronic and Electrical Engineering. I am very grateful to Forth Valley College for providing the foundation to develop.
“I would recommend Forth Valley College to anyone, it’s a fantastic college. The lecturers are outstanding and will help in every way they can. It’s a flexible and enjoyable environment to study.
“My entire time at Forth Valley College has been an amazing experience, however I would say that achieving 99% on my HNC graded unit gave me a real confidence boost in my ability and that anything is possible with hard work. What a life changing adventure!”
