An Early Years Education link between Forth Valley College and Falkirk’s Comely Park Nursery, is proving fruitful for students and seasoned professionals alike.

Braes High School sixth year pupil Lucy Wall (17) from Falkirk is currently studying for a Foundation Apprenticeship in Social Services, Children and Young People, while working on placement as an Early Education Assistant at Comely Park Nursery, under the watchful eye of Senior Early Years Officer Lynette Wilson (39) from Stenhousemuir, a former HNC Childcare and Education graduate from the Falkirk Campus.

Lucy, however is not the first FVC students or Modern Apprentice to spend valuable development time at the nursery which is delighted to help enthusiastic young people on the road to a rewarding career in early education.

Lucy, said: “I spend two half days a week at the nursery and I really like it. The best bit is interacting with the kids and helping out with the projects they are doing and in their play and learning.

“I really get a lot out of it and it is very worthwhile and I am following in the footsteps of Lynette who also studied at the college. The placement at Comely Park is certainly giving me a lot of confidence.

“Studying for my FA at the college is good as well and I like. I hope to go on and study for my HNC Childhood Practice at Forth Valley College after I complete what I am doing now. That means I could be going to the new campus which is currently being built and will open next year. I have been keeping an eye on it to see the progress.”

Lynette, said: “I chose to study at what was then Falkirk College in 1998 as I had always wanted to work in this field and I had heard that the college offered the HNC Childcare and Education course.

“The facilities and the lecturers were good, interesting and researching and studying in a further education setting was something that I had not done before so I enjoyed that aspect of it. I also enjoyed the practical experience which really benefitted me and going on work placement was really useful.

“Studying at the college has benefitted me enormously in my career and I really enjoy working with Modern Apprentices and current FVC students who come on work placement to our nursery and I can then pass on my experience and work together to help them achieve their qualification.

“We currently have a Foundation Apprentice – Lucy Wall - with us who is still at school and going through her FA at FVC and it is great she can come in and get some experience at our nursery and we can support them through their placements. I find it really rewarding helping them.”
