Forth Valley College’s new Head of Finance – Irene Andrew – took up her post in May 2016.
Irene - who is ACCA qualified and gained a Masters in Business Administration at Edinburgh University in 2007 - is responsible for the strategic and operational financial management for all aspects of Forth Valley College.
She said: “It is a very important role, but one that is really interesting, is totally different from what I did before and one that I enjoy and am excited by.
“I have worked in the public sector for the over 27 years mainly within the Scottish Courts Service. Thereafter I worked for a short time within the Finance Department of the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service and also the Scottish Tribunal Service and was Head of Finance for much of that time. I enjoyed working in this sector, but felt I needed a new challenge.
“Every day is different so I don’t really have a typical day which is great. As part of the structured induction I have visited all three campuses and have met so many different people from across all the departments in the College.
“I never realised just how many links with employers and universities – and other connections in general with other stakeholders – the College had, it is so varied and diverse and makes the job very interesting.
“Another challenge for the Finance Department to face is the conversion to FRS102 which is the technical rules governing how we prepare our annual accounts. This is to be implemented for this financial year 2015/16. A lot of planning went into this before I started, but there is still a lot for the finance team to do around implementation.
“The people I work with in my department are the best thing about my job. In fact everybody in the College has been really supportive since I started in May and that has really helped me to settle in quite quickly. I am always keen to learn something different and you certainly get that and more here at the College.”
