Ailsa Dermidy from Stirling is gearing up for a career in the RAF as an Aircraft Technician after completing an HNC through the Forth Valley College schools programme.
Ailsa (18) – who also gained six highers at Bannockburn High School - graduated with an HNC Civil Engineering and studied for her school programme qualification for two days a week over the last two years while still at secondary.
She mades such a great impact that she was presented with the Most Promising Student in the Department of Construction (sponsored by Scott Direct) at the Falkirk Town Hall graduation ceremony on Tuesday 3 October, 2017.
She, said: “The course gave me the option to gain a HNC in Civil Engineering whilst still allowing me to achieve my highers in school. it allowed me to get a jump start at the chosen career.
“The facilities and lecturers were great and the lecturers were very supportive throughout. Facilities, like the Learning Resource Centre (LRC), were very helpful during my graded unit.
“It's taught me to be a bit more independent than in high school. It has also giving me an insight into engineering, specifically civil, which I would not have had at school. It has strengthened my interest in engineering, and although I don't want to follow this specific sector, it has helped me make my mind up for my future.
“The lecturers that I had in my two years were all great and very knowledgeable in their specific units. My advice to other potential students would be that although it is hard work, it is all worth it in the end when you achieve this HNC and feel a great pride in yourself and your work. Also take plenty of notes throughout!
“The experience as a whole was great, I don't think I could single out one thing. All my classmates were great, along with all my lecturers, who were all supportive. Although part of the course was stressful, I'm happy I pushed through and completed the course with my highest effort.”
Commenting on her graduation prize, she said: “I feel very proud and happy to have won this award. It was a surprise and I did not expect it at all. Studying at the college has made me more confident and independent and I would recommend it to anyone at school thinking of doing an HNC.”
