Irene Mullen

SVQ Level 3 Hairdressing

Why FVC:

I had been out of work for four years and had a wee bit of a breakdown, but once I got back on the right track I felt that I wanted to go back to college and do something that I had always wanted to do - hairdressing! I plucked up the courage to go to the Clackmannan campus and pick up a prospectus  and it was easy after that. I had also known a few people on the course and they had said it was really good and that they enjoyed it. It was also my local college which was just great.

Favourite Moment:

I won a class hair competition last year when I was sitting my SVQ Level 2 and I am absolutely  made-up about that as I certainly did not expect to win.

Chosen Career:

I want to be a hairdresser and also put something back. A lot of people helped me get through some tough times when I was in a vulnerable place and I want to help those who are currently experiencing the things I went through.

Expected:

I came to college with an open mind, I didn't want to expect anything just in case, I tend to go with the flow.

Unexpected:

I did not expect to make as many friends as I have. From Classmates to clients I have a fantastic  social life now and do things I would never have done before.

AOQ:

I have found that you can ask the staff and lecturers anything - even things other than hairdressing - and they will be only too happy to help. They offer you great help and support.
