Actors from the popular Theatre Broad company beamed down to Forth Valley College’s Stirling Campus recently for rehearsal of their Christmas show.
Along with learners from the Stirling Campus Lifestart Drama Group and some former FVC students as well, Theatre Broad are boldly going where no theatre company has gone before with their production of 2 Stars and a Quest: When Santa Got Lost In Space.
A sequel to their 2007 award winning production of Star Quest, their present production is setting a course for a two night run on Wednesday 25 January and Thursday 26 January 2012, at the Tolbooth Theatre in Stirling.
The story joins the crew of the United Star Ship Stirlingprise in the year 2356 as they make their way home for Christmas. The crew are busy rehearsing the Panto “When Santa Got Lost In Space” which they will perform when they reach earth on Christmas Eve. But will they ever get home? As the Stirlingprise hurtles towards earth, the audience will hear those fearful and fateful words “Captain, we have a problem!”
Forth Valley College lecturer Eileen Parlane, said: “The Stirling Campus Lifestart Drama Group are working alongside Theatre Broad Company to be part of the Production 2 Stars and a Quest. This is the third time a group of students from Access and Progression are having the opportunity to work with the company. A group of former Forth valley Students are also involved, it is a wonderful experience for all the students to work with professional actors and perform live theatre.”
Lifestart students who are taking part include: Asad Anwar (18), Kevin Ging (19) and Stewart Wilson (19) all from Stirling and Mark Cruikshanks (19), Martyn Donnelly (18) and Michael Martin (19) from Falkirk.
Carol Metcalf, Artistic Director of Theatre Broad who wrote and directed the show, said: "Our method of encouraging students to act alongside professional actors has proved a stimulating and enjoyable experience. Both parties have brought something special to the production, and both will take much away."
Tangee Lenton, Executive Director of Theatre Broad who will appear in the show, said: “It is a pleasure to collaborate again with the students of Forth Valley College following our time with them on two previous productions. The experience of rehearsal is stimulating for both the students and the Company, and the performance itself is always particularly valuable to us all. Working together as a team with a common goal for the entertainment of an audience is constructive and rewarding for the students and it is a pleasure for Theatre Broad to see the growth in their confidence.”
This production is part of Theatre Broad’s award winning ‘Community Roots’ programme, which is funded by Creative Scotland through The Big Lottery Fund. It puts professional actors on stage with people of all ages who have learning disabilities. This time the participants come from Forth Valley College, Camphill and from the local communities of Stirling, Falkirk and Alloa.
Tickets priced at £8/5 (concession) are available from the Tolbooth by calling 01786 274000. The show will start at 7.30pm. For more information on Theatre Broad visit www.theatrebroad.co.uk
