Media Students in Driving Seat

Students from Forth Valley College’s Department of Creative Industries proved they’re on the road to success after being a big hit at the recent Intercontinental Rally Championship.

The event took place from the 7-9 October kicking off at Stirling Castle and ending at Scone Palace, Perth.

The learners had ‘access all area’ media passes and worked alongside world media outlets to get photos and video footage of all the action. They also had the opportunity to interview top names including winner Andreas Mikkelson and Jimmy McRae.

The eight learners to benefit from the opportunity are currently on a wide range of programmes from Access to Degree Level.  They included Stewart Kirby (16, Tullibody), Tammie-Lee McKenna (16, Bannockburn), Gordon Neil (26, Polmont), Michelle Henderson (17, Sauchie), Callum Jenkins (22, Falkirk), Andrew Grossart (23, Tillicoultry), Ryan Walker (23, Grangemouth) and Jennifer Forrest (23, Cleland).

Organisers were delighted with their performance and some of their work featured on the event website, blogs and the i-rally mobile phone application. There are now plans for college learners to undertake further work experience at the British Touring Car Championship next year.

Callum Jenkins said: “This was a great experience and something which you normally wouldn’t get the opportunity to do.  This was the first time I had ever done something like this and it was a totally different world.  It’s given me more confidence amongst strangers and hands-on experience of working with journalists.”

Michelle Henderson, who interviewed Jimmy McRae said: “I never thought I would do something like this, it’s been a total confidence boost. I was told I was asking the same questions as all the experienced reporters.”

Janieann McCracken, Creative Industries Lecturer said:

“Industrial experience is really beneficial in preparing our learners for the world of work and this opportunity was an excellent insight into the media industry.  We were really impressed with the standard of the team working at the event and they held their own amongst the other reporters.  It’s also to their credit that their work has featured in a number of media outlets.”
