Raploch: The New Style Capital

Students from Forth Valley College wowed the audience at their Annual Charity Hair and Beauty Show earlier this week.  The City and Guilds Hairdressing Level 3 students pulled out all the stops to send a fantastic array of looks down the catwalk at the show last week (Monday 23 May) which was held at the College’s Raploch Campus.

The theme this year was ‘Glamorous Global High Fashion’ with the students taking inspiration from major fashion capitals around the World including London, Paris, Milan and New York.

The result was an exciting and inspiring collection of hair styles to rival any top fashion event.

The end of year show forms an integral part of the Level 3 Hairdressing course with students being assessed on their creativity and event organisational skills.  Students currently on the course, and who were responsible for styling the models on the evening, were Lorna Duncan (20, Sauchie), Emma Grindlay (18, Falkirk), Wendy Hunter (18, Stirling), Nicole Keenan (18, Tillicoultry), Abbie McCluskie (19, Bonnybridge), Gemma Shaw (20, Bonnybridge), Natalie Wilson (18, Stirling) and Emilia Wrobel (26, Stirling).

Other departments within the College also contributed to the success of the event with Beauty Therapy doing a fantastic job with the model’s make-up, Creative Industries providing sound and music and Hospitality serving up refreshments and a delicious buffet.

Industry partners also got involved with high profile salon Couper and Co presenting models with a tribal theme.  In addition, a number of local businesses supported the event, including ‘Dress Diva’ who loaned clothing for the evening.

The show was a resounding success with 200 people turning out to watch the spectacle including friends, family and employers.  All proceeds from the ticket sales and also funds raised by a raffle and tombola will be donated to the charity Homestart.  The Department are hoping this figure will exceed at least £500.

Gail Jones, Curriculum and Quality Leader for Hairdressing at Forth Valley College said:

“The show is great experience for the students and something even many people in industry haven’t had the chance to do. The standard of work was excellent this year and both the students and staff worked really hard to get the event off the ground.  We’ve also been delighted with the support we’ve had for the event, especially from Couper and Co. Finally, a special thanks to all our models who helped make the show a hit"

The hit show also follows on the success of two award dinners which were held recently to mark the achievements of hair and beauty students at the college.  Each area had a dedicated evening at the College’s Raploch campus, enjoying a meal by the ‘dine@thecampus’ team before a certificate presentation.  Award categories on the night included participation and attendance, endeavor, citizenship, most promising student, outstanding academic achievement, outstanding practical achievement and student of the year

Student Chelsea Ferris also received a scholarship from Couper and Co at the event.  As part of the scholarship, Chelsea will spend time at Couper and Co over the summer undertaking an intensive training placement.   The salon plans to offer the opportunity to a college student on an annual basis from now on, delivering on their commitment to investing in young talent.
