David (18) from Whitburn, an employee of West Lothian Council, took part in the Skill Build regional heat at South Lanarkshire College in East Kilbride on 19 April and landed a second place after a mammoth six hour painting and decorating challenge.
His classmate Driss Keriouh (18) from Broxburn also competed in the event and acquitted himself well among 30 of the of the best young apprentices in Central Scotland.
First year SVQ Painting and Decorating student David, said:
“It was a brilliant day and I enjoyed the competition. It was a great experience, though I made a mistake at the start, but recovered well.
“I am really pleased with the silver medal as some of the things we were asked to do in the challenge we were set, we haven’t even covered yet in class. So I was trying some techniques that I hadn’t studied!”
Jim Kerr FVC Painting and Decorating lecturer, said: “I have a great crowd of lads in this class and we picked two who we felt were up for the challenge at the competition. David has done really well to finish second and Driss gave a really good account of himself. They had to do things in the challenge that we haven’t even covered yet, so I’m sure they’ll do even better if they take part next year!”
