Students Learn New Skills

Boosting the employability skills of students was the aim of an event which took place in the main assembly hall at Forth Valley College’s Falkirk Campus on Tuesday 8 March.

Lecturer Katy White from the Department of Access and Progression teamed up with Skills Development Scotland (SDS) to organise a Career Development day for students.

SDS staff delivered workshops to over 100 students throughout the day to help enhance their CVs, improve their interview techniques and social networking skills.  The students on the Pathfinder, Newstart and ACE  (Alternative Curriculum Education Courses) received training  which would enable them to feel confident whilst looking for work.

Fyona Laing Employment Adviser with SDS delivered the Social Networking workshops which highlighted to the students that information posted on networking sites which can be see in the public domain could potentially affect any future job opportunities.

Fyona said: “Today’s workshops have been really good and have shown students that if they are posting photographs and comments onto social networking sites to be aware and remember would you want your mum to see that!”

Katy White said: “Today’s event was a way to encourage students to engage with the services that SDS can provide and the workshops have ensured that the students have skills that they will need in the future to gain employment or move onto further education pathways.”

On attending the event, student Nataliee Johnson said: “The social networking presentation was an eye-opener - it made me aware of the dangers I could be exposed too. The presentation made me think of what I would be putting on my face book profile from now on!"
