Son and Hair

Mother and son trainee hair stylists are proving to be a class act as class-mates at Forth Valley College’s Raploch Community Campus salon in Stirling.

Julie (41) and Lee Sturrock (23) from Denny are already streaks ahead in their City and Guilds Hairdressing Level 2 course which began last August and are revelling in their own version of the generation game.

The pair have been working so well with each other that they even plan to open up their own salon once they complete their qualifications and enter the work place.

Julie, who is also a full-time care worker and previously studied on a business course at the college, said: “I absolutely love this course, the lecturers are fantastic and I wish I had done it years ago. Lee and I work really well together. Not only are we mother and son, but best pals as well.

“I remember cutting a few locks from his hair when he was a wee boy and now we are both going to be doing that for a living! Lee and I are even talking about starting up our own salon in the future.”

Lee, a former trainee chef, carer and barman, added: “I have a lot of friends who are hairdressers, but I always thought it wouldn’t be something I would be going into. However, I spoke with my mum who was thinking about taking the course and it started to really appeal to me.

“I am enjoying the course and I too wish I had done it sooner. I am so enthusiastic about it that I don’t just want to be good at it, I want to go right to the top. My mum and I work well together and we both hope to repay the faith our lecturers have put in us. It’s funny that the tables have turned as it’s me who now has to make sure she is keeping her homework up to date!”

Hairdressing Lecturer Janetta Hay, said: “It is quite unusual to have a parent and child in the same class, but they are working really well together. I interviewed both of them and initially I wondered if it would work in class, but I took a chance and it is paying off as they are both very good.

“Several of our students have gone on to open their own salons over the years. Lee is a natural hairdresser and what with Julie’s own hairdressing skills and her business knowledge, I’m sure the pair of them will give it a right good go in the future.”
