More than 100 diners battled through driving rain and wind to make it along to the College’s Middlefield Building in Falkirk on the evening of Friday February 4th, for a sit down meal cooked and served by the college’s eager and talented Hospitality students. Now in its fourth year the competition - based on the popular TV show ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ and took place in the Training Restaurant.
Lecturer Mandy, said: “It was a great experience for the students to get involved in a competitive environment. I’m sure they got a lot out of the evening. It’s great to win it for the first time and the banter on the night was great fun. I’m sure next year’s event will be just as exciting.”
George Scott the lecturer in charge of the Blue Team, said: “Even though we lost it was a very enjoyable night for everyone on the Blue Team and they all did very well under pressure. Obviously Mandy and her Red Team just pipped us on the night and I am happy for her to win it as that means all three lecturers in our department have won it. We are all looking forward to next year.”
Two teams - the blues and the reds – were tasked with preparing and serving a three course meal to a maximum of 120 hungry diners. Teams comprised of 16 students in total with eight in the kitchen and eight serving in the restaurant.
Each team had responsibility for separate areas of the audience, who comprise of staff, students and members of the general public.
The guests had the opportunity to watch the live action from the kitchen via screens set up in the restaurant before being asked to judge the teams. Marks were given for the presentation and quality of the food and also the service they received.
Tickets for the event, which has proved very successful with diners in the Forth Valley area were priced at £32.50 and included a free glass of bubbly on arrival, a three course meal and coffee and the chance to win some superb raffle prizes.
The event hoped to raise money for CHAS and the college will also use some of the funds raised on the night to encourage learning and develop citizenship among the students.
