FVC Face Up to Funding Cuts

Forth Valley College this week pledged that the quality of the learning experience would be central to their decisions as they begin a consultation to identify efficiency savings in response to the recent Scottish Funding Council Grant In Aid announcement.

The college will work very closely with staff and the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) and UNISON, the two main unions representing FVC employees, as they strive to manage cuts of around 10.4% for session 2011/12.

It is hoped that a second voluntary severance scheme recently opened up to staff in early January could help identify possible savings. But in the tough economic climate, management were unable to rule out the possibility of compulsory redundancies.

Principal Linda McKay said: “As a college, we have an excellent reputation for managing our resources effectively however, despite these efforts, such a significant reduction in our funding will inevitably mean a reduction in our services at a time when demand from young people, employers and the local community is at its highest.

“Whatever the pressures on the College I am confident that our staff will ensure that current students are not adversely affected.  We are a resilient organisation which has managed change well in the past.  I hope that we can draw on that strength and experience as we deal with these current challenges.”

She continued: “Ultimately, the College needs to become more sustainable and affordable. We hope the consultation process will help us to modernise the institution as a whole and make it fit for purpose for many years to come.
“Our two new campuses which are both well underway in Alloa and Stirling will help us to do this by being more energy efficient and economical.  Both builds are on schedule and will provide many opportunities to re-design and transform our provision.

“Looking to the future, the College will do all it can to play our part in Scotland’s economic recovery and continue to provide the highest level of service delivery with our available resources.”
