Keith Brown MSP will be dropping into Forth Valley College’s Help for Heroes fundraising event at Recreation Park on Sunday (August 29th) to receive the exhibition-match ball from the Army’s Golden Lions parachute display team as they land.
The Ochil MSP and former Royal Marine and Falkland War veteran will also dismiss the display team from the field after they float in around 1.30pm. Shortly afterwards the showcase match of the day featuring celebrity side Dukla Pumpherston will get underway.
Dukla are eyeing a win at the charity exhibition match against a mystery Central Scotland team. The game will kick-off at 2pm after the completion of a five-a-side tournament – between 9.30am-1pm - involving teams from the British Army, Central Scotland Police, Fire Brigade, Alloa Athletic’s and Falkirk FC’s community coaches, Streetsport homeless organisation, the local councils, as well as teams made up from staff and students from the college itself
Spectators will be made very welcome and tickets are priced at £5 for adults, £4.00 for students and OAPs and £2.50 for children – though under 12s get in for free when accompanied by an adult. Members of the public can pay at the gate on the day or obtain tickets beforehand by email on heather.gibson@forthvalley.ac.uk or phone 01259 215121.
Described as a “drinking team with a football problem” the team, created by comic actor Tony Roper, have announced a strong squad hoping to help draw the crowds and raise a lot of money for the worthwhile cause.
The eleven Dukla Pumpherston players starting the match will be chosen from: Mick Monohan (ex-Clydebank goalkeeper), Brian Martin (St Mirren, Partick Thistle, Motherwell, Scotland), Kenny Brannigan (Queen of the South Assistant Manager), Ronnie Yule (ex-Rangers), Gerry Collins ( ex-Hamilton Accies, Partick Thistle Manager, current manager of Dukla Pumpherston), Hugh Farrow (ex-East Kilbride Juniors, St Mirren), Bobby Russell (ex-Falkirk and Morton), Tommy Sheridan (ex-MSP), Chick Young (BBC Football Pundit), John McDonald (ex-Rangers), Dougie Bell (ex-Aberdeen, Rangers, Hibs), Stevie Cowan (ex-Aberdeen, Hibs, Motherwell), Gerry McCabe (ex-Clyde, Clydebank, Hamilton Accies), Gary McSwegan (ex-Rangers and Hearts), Gus McPherson (former St Mirren boss), Grant Inglis (ex-St Mirren, Leeds Utd) and Tony Roper alias Jamesie Cotter of Rab C Nesbitt fame.
There will also be all the usual fun-day activities for children and other activities such as a healthy eating demonstration from FVC chefs and catering students, an NHS health promotion event and stalls offering everything from healthy food to Indian head massage.
Keith Brown MSP said: “I am delighted to have been asked to attend Forth Valley College's Help for Heroes fundraising event and to receive the match ball for the exhibition match. I wish both teams the best of luck and I must say I am intrigued as to who is in the mystery team for Central Scotland.
“Help for Heroes is a fantastic charity which does a great job in providing help and support to our wounded soldiers and I hope the event is a great success.”
Heather Gibson Head of FVC’s Department of Sport Health and Wellbeing, who organised the event said: “We are delighted Keith Brown MSP has agreed to come along and accept the ball from the display team. Dukla Pumpherston also look like they will be turning up with a very strong squad filled with well known names from the world of football and showbiz.
“We are looking forward to the exhibition match just as much as the five-a-side tournament, which we hope will both help towards raising as much money as we can for Help for Heroes.
“It’s really great that so many local organisations and agencies feel the same and are entering teams to play in the tournament. However as well as everyone having fun, we wanted to take advantage of the day to put across health and wellbeing messages and we feel we have struck the right balance with our plans. It promises to be a very exciting day all round.”
