Martha's Made-Up with Logbook Look

Each time a UK City and Guilds Beauty trainee opens their logbook this coming term, they are sure to marvel at a make-up look created by a 15 year-old Forth Valley College student.

Earlier this year Martha Ritchie (15) from Larbert – who recently completed her VRQ level 1 Certificate in Salon Services at the college’s Falkirk Campus – entered a national competition to find the new logbook cover by sending in photographs of her very own creations.

Her styles and looks wowed the judges who had to sift through dozens of entrants from across the UK and earned her the right to recreate her look in London, on a professional model while photographs were taken of her style.

Now, Martha’s finished look will appear on the logbook’s cover. Inside the logbook, there will be a profile on Martha along with additional photos of her work. The new logbook will be used by hundreds of students for the coming year.

Martha, a 4th year pupil at St Mungo’s High School who attended the college two days a week, is now eager to come back to college to study psychology as well as continue to pursue a career as a make-up artist. She said: “I spent one and a half hours down at City and Guilds’ offices in London recreating my look and I was pretty nervous – especially with the photographers snapping away and zooming in very close.

“The night before the photo session I had been up till after midnight practicing. But they put me at my ease and were really pleased with the result and said it was very nice and just what they were looking for. It was a great experience and I am delighted to see my work on the new logbooks.

“I really like art at school and would love to have a career as a make-up artist and hopefully progress to work in make-up for theatre, film, music videos and the fashion industry’s catwalks.

“My lecturers at Forth Valley College have been great and very supportive since I started doing this course when I was in 3rd year at school. Winning this logbook opportunity along with all the things I have learned here is a great start and will be fantastic for my portfolio.”

Forth Valley College Beauty Lecturer Kathryn Baird, said: “We are all very proud of Martha and her achievement and we fully expect to see her work on the front page of Cosmopolitan in five or six years time.

“From the moment I met Martha in the first session and talked to her about the finer points of make-up, I came away thinking to myself that there was nothing I could really teach this girl as she is so good. Though we still hope she will come back next year and continue to learn as much as she can on our beauty courses. She is a delight to have in class.”

Anita Crosland, City & Guilds’ Product Manager for Beauty, Nails, Spa and Complementary Therapies says Martha’s success is definitely something to be proud of. She said: “City & Guilds is constantly striving to help young people unleash their talent and creativity. Our annual logbook competition is a great opportunity for individuals to demonstrate the skills they’ve learnt and it’s always very competitive. Martha did a great job and will no doubt inspire future students. She should be really proud of what she’s achieved.”
