Brian Snaps Up Top Photographic Prize

A Forth Valley College lecturer with an eye for a good picture has won a prestigious photographic competition.

Art and Graphic Design lecturer Brian Smith snapped up top prize in the recent Nominet Trust Street Galleries competition and currently has his winning image displayed along Glasgow’s Sauchiehall Street in a special pop-up exhibition.

Brian – who was presented with his prize of a Panasonic DMC G3 camera at a Brian Smithspecial presentation before the launch of the Glasgow exhibition - was also the subject of a recent six page feature, showing off seven of his best pics in the well respected Digital Photography Enthusiast magazine.

He revealed that for the last three years he has been posting a photograph a day on the Blipfoto website and regularly blogging on what camera and procedure he used along with what inspired him to snap the image.

The black and white picture that won the competition showed Brian in his alfresco office in his back garden in Clackmannanshire as he used his laptop computer to work and play.

Brian said:

It’s been a great two months and it really is exciting what can happen off the back of what is a hobby for me. Photography is part of my daily life and through the summer holidays it helps keep the creative juices flowing."
Photos used in the magazine included: the winning shot from the competition, various scenes from Forth Valley, a self portrait, artistic snaps of Brian’s teenage children and a tasteful and humourous black and white image taken at the new FVC Stirling Campus, showing two human skeletons holding hands and looking out at the Wallace Monument from the life drawing classroom.

He added:

“I am delighted to have won the competition and I hope that my success might inspire some of my students to see that posting a daily photo on a site such as Blipfoto can help develop their own creativity. If nothing else it’s great fun.”
