A trainee welder from Callander put on a sparkling display at the Scottish National Final of the BOC Apprentice Welders’ Competition last week.
Greg McPherson (22) who studies full-time at the Forth Valley College on a City and Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Welding, finished runner up at the Angus College, Arbroath venue (13-14 June) and managed to split two full-time apprentices from BAE Systems on the Clyde.
Another top FVC learner – James McGarry (19) a day release student in NC in Fabrication from Kirkintilloch – put on a great show finishing just outside the top three on the day.
And in the heat leading up to the final at Carnegie College in April both Greg, James and another FVC welding student - Andrew Reid (19) Larbert - finished first, second and third respectively.

FVC Lecturer Des McCabe, said: “The lads we took up to Angus College last week have done a brilliant job in the competitions recently, For Greg to finish second and split two full-time apprentices from BAE Systems is a great achievement and a testament to his skill.
“Greg will now be invited to the UK final at The Welding Institute in Cambridge in October, where he will compete against the top three welders from England, Wales and Northern Ireland respectively. He really deserves this opportunity as he has done fantastically well.”
