Mellissa Martin (19) from Camelon, Falkirk - who is currently studying for an HND in Hospitality Management – travelled to the Lausanne School of Hospitality in Switzerland last November as part of the HIT (Hospitality Industry Trust) Scotland Bursary scheme.
She was chosen along with seven other students from across the country to visit the well-respected centre of excellence to see at first hand the best techniques are taught in the hospitality and service industries.
Mellissa said: “It was absolutely amazing. There are students from 89 different nationalities at the school and it was great to see at first-hand how hospitality is taught throughout the world in relation to culture, uniforms and body language.
“It was great to be chosen to go on the trip and to apply I had to write an essay on ‘Why I wanted to go’ and it certainly lived up to my expectations. The experience has inspired me even more to do well on my course as I want – now more than ever – to become a general manager of a hotel.”
Aiveen Mcallister, Curriculum Quality Leader (CQL) in the Department of Hospitality and Salon Services, who was the FVC lecturer who accompanied Mellissa on the trip, said: “This was a wonderful experience for Mellissa and I’m sure she will have taken a lot out of it. We will continue to encourage our students to apply for these HIT Bursary trips as they really help with their development.”
