The 17 first year HNC Computer Support students at based at Falkirk have all volunteered to use their skills to help fellow learners and staff with any computer problems they may have – in return for a voluntary donation if clients are happy with the work.
The students can also help with some software fault finding, virus detection and removal and advice workshops such as setting up mobile devices on EDUROAM. It is hoped the valuable hands on experience gained will also help promote their citizenship and employability skills.
Bryce Hunter (19) from Dunblane, said: “It has already been quite busy and we have only been up and running for a couple of weeks. The main problems so far have been with laptops with viruses, but there is certainly a market for our services and we will get a lot out of this experience.”
Computer lecturer Brian Candlish, said: “This is a great initiative and allows the students to get stuck into some real hands on work trying to identify computer problems and then fixing them. There are actually two or three students in the class with previous experience of repairing laptops so as well as me shadowing the group it is a real case of peer learning cascading down throughout the class.”
All you need to do to contact Campus Computers is come and meet the students in Rooms 10 and 11 at the Falkirk Campus main building, e-mail; campuscomputers4u@gmail.com or find them on Facebook.
